The Law

5/20/2018

Today we discussed the role of the Law and the ministry of Jesus, who came, not to abolish that Law, but to fulfill it.
However, the question that comes up is this: If Jesus fulfilled the Law, do I still need to obey it? Or, if my faith is in Jesus, do I get a pass?
What follows is 350 words that I edited from the final sermon that discusses the different types of law and how each effected the ministry of Jesus, and how each should effect our actions in this world.

  1. And the three different types of the Law
    1. Are Civil law
      1. Moral law
        1. And Ceremonial law
  2. Civil law
    1. Of course
      1. Refers to the laws that we create
        1. As a society
    2. Laws like stop signs
      1. And speed limits
    3. Laws like protection for consumers
      1. And protection from insider trading
    4. Laws like
      1. Getting a dog license
        1. Or jaywalking
  3. These laws
    1. While based on common causes
      1. Of protection of society and care
        1. Are changeable and temporary
          1. Based on the society that we live in
  4. The second type of law
    1. Is moral law
  5. Moral laws
    1. Such as the Ten Commandments
      1. Refer to God’s nature
        1. Communicated through calls of behavioral actions
  6. A moral law
    1. Calls us not to murder
      1. Not to steal
        1. Not to covet
          1. And not to set up idols
  7. Moral laws
    1. Reveal the nature of God
      1. And when we obey the moral laws
        1. We reveal that God is working within us
          1. Even if it is in a prevenient way
  8. The last type of law
    1. Is ceremonial law
  9. Ceremonial law
    1. Specifically relates to the practices
      1. Of the ancient Israelites
        1. That were completed
          1. In order to symbolize
            1. The completion of the work of God
              1. Through His Messiah
  10. So animal sacrifices
    1. Wave offerings
      1. Grain offerings
        1. And those ceremonies you find in the Old testament
          1. Are all examples
            1. Of ceremonial law
  11. Now understanding
    1. The tri-fold nature
      1. Of the word Law
        1. We can now go back
          1. And read Jesus’ statement
            1. In this light
  12. Do not think
    1. That I have come to abolish
      1. The civil
        1. Moral
          1. Or ceremonial law
    2. I have not come to do that
      1. But instead
        1. I have come to fulfill them
  13. Which should cause us to ask
    1. How did Jesus fulfill them
      1. And what do these laws then
        1. Mean for me?
  14. Friends
    1. Jesus
      1. As a human citizen of this earth
        1. Fulfilled the civil law
      2. Of His time
        1. By paying taxes
          1. And not seeking to cause rebellion against Caesar
    2. Jesus fulfilled
      1. The moral law
        1. By obeying all of God’s commandments
          1. Perfectly
            1. Even though He was tempted to reject those commands
    3. And Jesus fulfilled
      1. The ceremonial law
        1. In life
          1. As a Jewish man
    4. But more importantly
      1. In His death and resurrection
